Crazy rules for NY Sun interns

I interned at a bunch of media outlets while I was in college. Not only was I not subjected to this insane list of rules for the interns at the New York Sun, I even managed to get paid every now and then. I can't imagine some of my former supervisors wearing a suit to their weddings, let alone to the office; but with the number of journalism students dwarfing the number of jobs, I can imagine why the Sun was confident that applicants would line up for the opportunity to essentially pay for the privilege of schvitzing in a suit through a New York summer making coffee and copies. I'm sure they learn a lot; and excluding talented students who can't afford to take unpaid internships (and, as the source did, pay hefty dry cleaning bills) is an issue in many fields. But with traditional outlets like the Sun under so much pressure to compete for consumers, some of these rules only seem to make them seem more obsolete.
