The Martha Organization

The phrase "home economics" is a bit of a throwback these days- my high school didn't even offer it. But if your country was huddled on the edge of a crumbling empire and got a scant 5 hours of daylight a day in the winter, it makes sense that you'd want to make your home as cozy as possible. With that in mind, the Martha Organization was founded in Finland in 1899 "to promote the quality and standard of life in the home." They're still around today and have expanded their mission to include advocacy for environmental and consumer protection, adult education, and a development project funding a solar powered bakery in Burkina Faso. Obviously this group has nothing to do with our Martha. But it's kind of uncanny, isn't it? Oh my people, you never cease to amaze me.
